I haven't looked for months, but the tutorial in the docs is the best I've seen.

PicDoodle: A simple Facebook virus

Probably not the first of its kind, but it sure is annoying. It works like this:

1. When you add the application, it requests permission to see your profile, but then it requests the "photo_upload" extended permission (the dialog requests permission to "Allow Photo Uploads from PicDoodle").
2. Once you grant it that permission, it silently uploads a small photo (for me it was a 16x16 white image, but for some people, it seems to upload a differe

An oldie but goodie: An artist is given LSD and instructed to draw the doctor administering the drug. The results are amazing.

Godaddy happened... or at least I think it was godaddy's fault. Mush pot's hosted at godaddy (despite the warnings) because they have pretty good rates. But yesterday, the server was totally inaccessible, not responding to pings, etc. BTW, godaddy does have pretty good phone support--you can call and talk to someone intelligent. The reason they gave was that "the server crashed on restart", but I don't know if I believe that, since the rep first told me it was a problem "on their end", which I interpret as a routing problem in their network. I was looking at E... <more>

Before the Rocky Mountain News was Suck, shutting down all the way back in 2001. Ahead of their time, but also reliably funny and always razor-sharp. In 2005, keepitgoing.org chronicled the story of Suck in a very long article: The Big Fish: Ten years later, the story of Suck.com, the first great website. The article reprints this "manifesto" from the very early days:

Shit makes great fertilizer, but it takes a farmer to turn it

A shorter URL for mush pot: http://?.ws/?.

That's the unicode character for hot springs: U+2668. URL courtesy tinyarro.ws, purveyors of the "shortest URLs on earth".

EDIT: nevermind, the mushpot db doesn't store multibyte characters yet.. :(

OpenDNS, where have you been all my life? Bypass your stupid monopolist ISP's broken DNS server today! Totally free, and you don't even need an account. It's almost too good to be true.

Spoiler: the addresses are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

User whughes at ycombinator recommends 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 instead, which are level3 servers and much faster, apparently.

Nice idea...I didn't think of that. Maybe I'll put a "share on facebook" link under every item. It'll call FB.Connect.showShareDialog, which opens a dialog to either post the permalink to the item on your wall or send it in a private message to someone.

Thinking about using Facebook Connect on your site? Great! Step one: Abandon your will to live.

I kid! You'll get monthly conjugal visits with your will to live. And by "will to live", I'm including faith in humanity, sense of self worth, satisfaction at a job well done, etc.

First, everyone, please give me a moment alone with Facebook Connect:

By "text", I meant you can use <b>, <a> and <br>, but that's all stuff that shows up as text--you can't include images or formatting in one-line or short stories, apart from what you pass in template_data.

For contacting users, there are the notifications.sendEmail and notifications.send API methods. For notifications.sendEmail, you have to have already requested the "email" extended permission, possibly usin

The Allowed FBML and HTML Tags page in the Facebook dev docs specifies the markup you can use in feed stories. You provide feed stories to Facebook in three sizes: one-line, short, and full. In full stories you can use HTML, but full stories don't normally show up on the user's friends' News Feeds (I don't think). For short-sized stories, the title and body are all text, but you can include images, video, etc. with them using the template_data argument when you call ... <more>
